Nested Replies?

When replying to folks in the April Art Share thread (April Art Share! Share your work here!)

I noticed that comments and replies to comments were listed in chronological order instead of replies being nested under a comment. I think that makes reading more awkward and buries new comments under replies.

Does this site supported nested replies? If so I am in favor of them.

I dunno if folks know what I mean when I say nested replies but it would look something like this. Typically nested replies are hidden/collapse until clicked or they are at least intended and always under the comment they are a reply to.

So instead of chronological replies which look like this from the April Art Share:

  • morriebird posts
  • Garrett comments
  • Erika comments (sharing art)
  • morriebird replies to Erika
  • morriebird replies to Garrett
  • Garrett replies to morriebird’s latest reply
  • Rimbert comments (sharing art)
  • Rimbert comments
  • Roxyfae comments (sharing art)
  • morriebird replies to Rimbert
  • morriebird replies to Roxyfae
  • etc etc etc

Nested replies would look more like:

  • morriebird posts
  • Garrett comments
    • morriebird replies to Garrett
      • Garrett replies to morriebird
  • Rimbert posts (sharing art)
    • morriebird replies to Rimbert
  • Roxyfae posts (sharing art)
    • morriebird replies to Roxyfae
      • Roxyfae replies to morriebird
    • GraySkies replies to Roxyfae
      etc etc

@morriebird I looked into this a little bit but unfortunately I couldn’t find a good solution. The software this runs on is called Discourse, and there are plugins available you can install, and people talking about what you want — but I think perhaps it’s not easy because not how Discourse was designed. I’ll keep looking tho!

yea I was looking around on other forums for examples and it seems like it is something Discourse doesn’t support. Which is a shame! Seems like it has been a requested feature for a long time but no luck.

There is apparently a setting called enable filtered replies view but I also can’t find an example of that so I don’t know what it would end up looking like. Maybe it would automatically put replies at the bottom of the list rather than placing them between replies to the main post?
